Passive protection in uninsulated metal pipe penetrations

TUBI METALLICI NUDI 1

Metal pipes, or non-combustible pipes, have a melting point that in most cases exceeds 1000°C; therefore, even in the event of a fire, they are able to maintain their structural integrity, unlike combustible pipes. However, non-combustible materials such as iron, steel, copper, etc., are characterized byhigh thermal conductivity, which causes them to overheat rapidly in the event of a fire. This property of the material can become a potential source of ignition for fires in adjacent compartments and, for this reason, must be managed through passive protection measures.

If the non-combustible pipe is covered with insulating material, in most cases installing a fire collar will be sufficient to ensure proper compartmentalization. For more information on this scenario, please refer to: PASSIVE PROTECTION FOR INSULATED PLASTIC AND METAL PIPE PENETRATIONS USING FIRE-RATING COLLARS

Below are the two fire-resistant sealing solutions suitable for compartmentalizing uninsulated metal pipe penetrations: CORH VTM and CORH SPC.

Intumescent paint: CORH VTM

CORH VTM intumescent paint, a water-based synthetic resin paint, is designed to provide fire protection for uninsulated steel, cast iron, or copper pipe penetrations. When exposed to high temperatures, the coating forms a durable thermal insulation layer that protects the pipe by inhibiting the spread of fire by induction.

Istruzioni di montaggio CORH VTM

ETA-certified up to EI 120, CORH VTM fire-resistant paint is easy to apply directly on-site with a brush or trowel, for both vertical and horizontal penetrations. CORH VTM fire-resistant paint is available in cartridges or buckets, depending on the number of openings to be protected.

SPECIFICATION ITEM for uninsulated metal pipes CORH VTM
Supply and application of CORH VTM synthetic resin-based intumescent paint with fire resistance ratings up to EI 120, to be applied to both sides of penetrations by uninsulated metal pipes (steel, cast iron, copper). ETA-certified and CE-marked.

CORH VTM – HOW TO

Fire-resistant protective sheath: CORH SPC

CORH SPC is a glass wool mat that is aluminized and treated with ablative components. The ablative properties of the coating, when in contact with the piping, trigger a cooling effect in the event of a fire, preventing its spread by induction to another compartment. The dimensions of a roll of CORH SPC are: length 5,000 mm x width 240 mm x average thickness 7 mm. Fire-resistant up to EI 120 according to EN 1366-3 for both walls and ceilings.
Easy to apply directly on-site. The CORH SPC roll is shaped, then wrapped directly around the pipe where it contacts the floor slab or wall, and finally secured with a piece of wire.

To view the technical data sheet and certificates for the CORH SPC, go to: CORH SPC – TECHNICAL DATA SHEET.

CORH SPC SPECIFICATION ITEM
Supply and installation of protective sleeves for bare metal pipes, with a maximum diameter of 200 mm, consisting of a glass wool mat, aluminized and treated with ablative components capable of maintaining the temperature below the threshold required by EN 1366-3.
